Match Preview: Bundesliga, Fixture 8, Vfl Wolfsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen

Saturday, 16.08.2010, 18:30 (GMT+2)

Press Conference (Thursday)

Opening Statement Jupp Heynckes: “Eren Derdiyok played only 10 minutes with his national team on Tuesday because he wasn’t feeling well.  He has a flu at the moment and that’s why he also did not participate in the training session today.  We have to wait how this develops.  He has to fully recover, if I let him train or play before, it will make it only worse.

All the others players have returned healthy from their national teams and took part in our training session today.  Of course at a lower intensity than the rest so that they can travel to Wolfsburg near full strength.

Wolfsburg has a powerful attack with Diego, Dzeko and Grafite.  Our opponent has scored a lot of goals in the beginning of this season but they have also shown weaknesses in defense.  After our decent performances in Madrid, where we should have won, and against Bremen I think that my team is making progress despite all the injuries. We need to continue this positive trend in Wolfsburg and try to win the game just like we did last year.”

Question: How is the situation with Simon Rolfes?

Heynckes: Always the same question! I just talked to Simon and told him that all journalists want him to play from the beginning.  He however thinks that we still need to be patient 🙂 .  Simon is often very tired after training sessions or matches.  Today for example I noticed on the training ground that he wasn’t as dynamic as on other days.  All his medical check-ups have been positive.  He will be very soon an alternative for the starting line-up because we need him.

Injuries Update from Kicker

-Gonzalo Castro: is running again after his torn muscle fibre. He will need two weeks to return to the team.
-Renato Augusto: It is not known when he will be back in training. (He sprained his ligaments in Madrid and should have recovered by now).

Line-up

Heynckes is likely to make just one change to the team that started against Bremen.  Bender should make it back into the line-up for Balitsch.  If Derdiyok recovers by Saturday he will for sure not start from the beginning and come in later only if necessary.

Line-up Wolfsburg (from Kicker):

Goalkeeper Benaglio picked up a muscular problem with the national team on Tuesday and will not be available to coach McClaren.  That’s very good news for Bayer 04!

Around 1000 Leverkusen fans will support their team in Wolfsburg.  Last year we won 2:3 with a strong performance by Simon Rolfes who scored 2 goals:

What are you thoughts on the game? Comment below!

I don’t have a good feeling about Saturday! Diego-Dzeko-Grafite can put Hyypiä and M.Friedrich into serious problems despite the extra protection we have build around them (formation change to 1 striker).  I would be more than happy with a draw!

If our team repeat the display against Bremen this Saturday with a little more efficiency, it’s gonna be another victory for the WERKSELF
