Match Preview: Bundesliga, Fixture 11, Bayer Leverkusen vs 1.FC Kaiserslautern

Sunday, 7/11/2010, 17:30 (GMT+1)

Press conference (Friday)

Opening Statement Jupp Heynckes: “…What I liked very much yesterday was that my players were self-critical with their performance.  That’s the 1st step for improvement because against Kaiserlautern we need to change several things.  We need to try to be again dominant at home, that’s what I explained the team this morning.

Question: Will the next weeks with less games give you the chance to find a line-up that will play this kind of football?

Heynckes: Yesterday I took a risk but it’s the only way to see also other players in an official game rather than in training.  For Sunday I have a different plan but I am also again forced to adapt my line-up because Lars Bender could be not available.  Lars has a strong head bruise, we will have to see how that develops but I don’t have much hope.  I am confident nevertheless that we will see a different performance on Sunday.

Question: Arturo Vidal is an exception to the overall bad performance of the team.  Why has he has developed so well?  Is it also because you talk with him in Spanish to tell him what’s wrong and right?

Heynckes: Arturo Vidal is young, it’s normal that he continues to grow as a player.  Of course as coach you have to guide and tell him what he has to do and what not.  This is easier in Spanish!  Yesterday and in previous games he showed an enormous physical strength.  The way he plays football is energy demanding as he is actively involved both in defense and offense.  Only the big names in football can manage to do so well in both aspects.  He is on a right path to become a great player.

Question: René Adler had problems with his knee, is it anything serious?

Heynckes: He is suffering at the moment an inflammation of the patellar tendon, that’s why he hardly could kick the ball in the second half.  He should be okay.

Question: Apart from Lars Bender’s injury, what else could change in the line-up on Sunday?

Heynckes: Simon Rolfes is likely to replace Lars Bender.  Daniel Schwaab will also play from the beginning.  We could see yesterday how important he is for us.

Barnetta, Rolfes,Schwaab and Derdiyok should make it back to the team.
