Match Preview: Bundesliga, Fixture 15, Bayer Leverkusen vs 1.FC Cologne

Sunday, 04/12/2010, 15:30 (GMT+1)

Derby time! The Werkself will play on Sunday against the team on the other side of the Rhine. Cologne Fans don’t give this match derby status, for them the real derby is against Mönchengladbach. But it’s more a way to discredit us, because:

– every Cologne newspaper calls this a derby
– last year after the 0:0, a player from Cologne wore an Anti-LEV Shirt.  Why if it’s just a normal match?
– Tickets for this match are sold out in a few hours
– Cologne Fans burn pyrotechnic devices nearly every year in the BayArena
– Everyone on the streets in Cologne or Leverkusen discusses this match with a lot of passion.  The distance between both cities is 14 km.

Press conference (Friday)

Opening statement Jupp Heynckes: “We have a difficult match ahead of us. Cologne is better than the current Bundesliga table says. In the last two matches against Stuttgart and Wolfsburg they have shown an upward trend.  They will prepare the derby in great detail and try to deliver a good performance.  We know how they will play and we will prepare our tactics according to this.  Last year we saw how difficult it was to beat them, however we are in a good form and we have improved the offensive aspects of our game in the last weeks.

Question: What’s the situation with René Adler?

Heynckes: Our team doctor in Leverkusen confirmed that he had lumbar back pains.  A specialist for this kind of injuries treated René in Munich.  He was feeling better and working out today in the Gym.  Tomorrow he will join us in the training session.  I am positive that he will play on Sunday.  Otherwise we have an outstanding alternative: Fabian Giefer.

Question: Will Lars Bender after his strong game against Rosenborg continue in the starting line-up?

Heynckes: I will have to see.  Arturo Vidal is back in training, he was not at 100% this week.  The good thing is that I have so many options and whoever I put on the pitch, the team continues to play at the same level.  Lars had a great game on Wednesday, he annulled Annan who was so frustrated that he committed a foul that was worth a red card.  I still have to continue analysing Cologne and then I will decide.  Simon Rolfes is also coming back for this match and I was also happy with Reinartz’s performance in midfield.  However I am still worried about Tranquillo Barnetta.  He took part today again in the training session but we will have to wait how his knee responds to the physical efforts.

Question: Helmes, Bender and M.Friedrich played with short sleeve shirts in Trondheim.  Was this like a message that they were fine with the weather conditions? How did you see Helmes performance?

Heynckes: Some players decided to play this way, other wore long-sleeves and two shirts.   Helmes was active, he ran a lot and had a few chances.  Of course he can still improve but I was fine with his performance.  Every player has specific duties he needs to fulfill in our tactical formation.  That’s what I also expect from Patrick.

“We know how they will play and we will prepare our tactics according to this.”  Against defensive Cologne I speculate on a 4-2-2-2, the German newspapers however believe that we will continue in the 4-2-3-1.
