Game Report: Bundesliga, Fixture 25, Bayer Leverkusen vs VfL Wolfsburg 3:0

A deserved and important victory for the Werkelf against a disappointing opponent.  The match was already decided in the first half when Bender, Renato Augusto and Kiessling established a 3:0 lead.

This despite that the personal situation before this game was all other than good.  Hyypiä received the order from the coach to stay at home and recover from a stomach bug.  4 other players in the line-up had similar problems.  Ballack was not called up and trained individually on Saturday morning (more on this in a separate post).  2 places on the bench remained therefore empty given the short-notice and the important game of the reserve on the same day.  Kiessling returned to the line-up in a home match for away-striker Derdiyok.

The game was boring in its initial stages but once Bender scored the first goal for the Werkself (21 min.) this changed and Wolfsburg suffered big-time.  Renato Augusto made the second one from outside of the area few minutes later (29 min.).  Kiessling increased to 3:0 in a 1 on 1 before half-time (45+1 min.).  It wasn’t Benaglio’s day, who did not look good in any of the received goals.

In the second half, Wolfsburg improved a little but at no point this was meant to change the game.  Leverkusen could have scored a few more goals but decided to save energy for the important match against Villarreal on Thursday.

Comments on players

Vida made yesterday his best game for Bayer 04 so far.  However his passes and offensive actions still have room for improvement.

Schwaab took again the role of centre-back when M.Friedrich had to be substituted after 14 minutes due to a bruised shoulder.  He was again solid in the few offensive actions that Wolfsburg had.  This position suits him!

Kiessling continues to score, but he could make more out of his chances.  Often he misses/destroys them because he fails to control the ball properly.

Renato Augusto: OUTSTANDING!  We have wasted his talent many years on the wing.

Patrick Helmes: 45 minutes played, 7 ball contacts, 1 shot and 4 of 4 succesful passes.  That should say it all!
