Came across this video on Youtube and thought I might share it with you.

The football pitch that is right behind the BayArena will become the new Ulrich-Haberland Stadium where the second (reserve), female and youth teams will play their matches from January on.

It’s future capacity has not yet been determined as we need to get it licensed by the DFB.  It’s a complicated issue, it looks like that we have to even rely on Frau Merkel from Berlin to pass through a new law.  Germany, the country of regulation 🙂

Next to the new Ulrich-Haberland Stadium are our 2 training pitches where the professional and other teams have their training sessions.

The second team is not doing very well in the Regionalliga West (4.Division)  and is ranked 17th of 18  teams with just 5 points after 9 games.  Coach of this team is Bayer 04 Legend Ulf Kirsten.  Last year we avoided relegation in the last match of the season!  This season the struggle to maintain ourselves in the league looks even tougher as we have loaned out more youth players than usual to teams in the 1. and 2.Bundesliga.  A relegation would be a hard hit because a second team should give young players a  reasonable stage for development.   The second teams of Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen and Vfb Stuttgart even play in the 3.Liga (maximum that a second team can reach).  That should be our aim in a few years!

In July 2008 Bayer Leverkusen decided also to have a female team.  They started off in the 2.Bundesliga and have promoted last season to the 1.Bundesliga!  After a bad start with a 0:9 loss to Duisburg their results have been improving lately.  Currently we hold the 11th position out of 12 teams with 7 points after 8 matches.  The last two teams relegate and we are just 1 point behind a non-relegation place in the table.

The philosophy is similar to the masculine team: Young and talented female players!

The round building on the other side of the BayArena is the Smidt-Arena, is a multifunction event venue.  It is used by the Bayer 04 Basketball team (Bayer Giants Leverkusen) for the home games of the 2.Liga and for music concerts and other events and can hold up to 3.500 spectators.
