Friendly: VfL Bochum vs Bayer Leverkusen 0:3

Tuesday’s friendly was won thanks to the goals of Ballack, Vidal (penalty) and Derdiyok.

Michael Ballack began losing quite a few balls in the first 20 minutes but then steadily improved.  He scored a goal after a corner and gave the assist to Derdiyok’s goal.

It seems that our number “13”, is in a much better physical condition then at the start of the season.  Heynckes  (see Preview Dortmund game) and the fans yesterday watching the game confirmed this.

He should get at least 30 minutes against Mönchengladbach on Sunday.

Some players from the second and youth team participated too.  A 4-2-2-2 was used in this friendly:

Vidal(80. Kramer),Ballack

Holzhäuser denies that Leverkusen will sign Rhodolfo:

Patrick Helmes to Vfl Wolfsburg, 1.FC Cologne or Dortmund?

Friendly: Vfl Osnabrück vs Bayer Leverkusen 0:3

Another win for the Werkself in their last test game before Friday’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund. Adler, Ballack, Derdiyok and Barnetta stayed in Leverkusen to continue working on their recovery. Especially the decision to not give Ballack minutes in this test game has caused a lot of discussion in the media. Rudi Völler pledged publically that he needs match practise to regain his level.  However after the game against Oberhausen, Michael did not train the following day due to an infection. This is the main reason for the coach to not include him.

The Werkself scored early (11 min.), Simon Rolfes put down the first goal after a corner by Patrick Helmes. The team from Osnabrück did not hide in this first half but Leverkusen improved as the minutes passed, especially after the break the ball was moved with great ease and precision.  In a nice combination on the left side and following a pass by Lars Bender, Renato Augusto increased to 0:2 (60 min.).  5 minutes later Sidney Sam added one more for the Werkself.  Jupp Heynckes made a lot of changes at this point.  Arturo Vidal, who had just returned to Germany on Friday, got also to play a few minutes.

Our coach said after the 0:3 win that the starting line-up of this friendly is very similar to what he has is in mind for the Dortmund game.

Schwaab (74. Vida), Reinartz, Friedrich (70. Hyypiä), Castro (75. Kadlec)

Rolfes (70. Vidal), Bender (70. Balitsch)

Renato Augusto, Sam (75. Jörgensen)

Kießling, Helmes

Adler will play for sure against Dortmund.  Hyypiä (for Reinartz) and Vidal (for Bender) should move in too.  Barnetta has also some chances to start from the beginning.  A surprise would be to see Ballack or Derdiyok in the starting line-up.

It seems that we are switching back to a 4-2-2-2.  With Kiessling on board that makes a lot of sense, he is the ideal complement for either Helmes or Derdiyok.  He will do the needed defensive work (including falling back into midfield) and be a reference for us in attack by holding balls and creating spaces for others.  We saw his importance in the last games before the winter break, in which he gave 2 assists for Helmes.

Kiessling + Helmes = OK
Kiessling + Derdiyok = OK
Helmes + Derdiyok = not compatible

These are my equations!  Feel free to discuss!

Friendly: Rot-Weiß Oberhausen vs Bayer Leverkusen 1:2

The Werkself wins its first test game in 2011 under pouring rain by 1:2.  Lars Bender put Leverkusen in front after 15 minutes, but Oberhausen equalled the score through Grothe (58 min.) by taking advantage of a disorganised defense as Heynckes decided to introduce 9 changes after the break!  Derdiyok scored the winner for Leverkusen with a nice header.  The Swiss had to substituted soon after, due to muscular problems (should not be serious).

Schwaab(46. Da Costa)-Friedrich(46. Hyypiä)-Reinartz(46. Vida)-Castro(46. Kadlec)

Rolfes(46. Balitsch)-Bender(46. Ballack)

Sam(46. Kaplan)-Augusto(46. Derdiyok, 78. Kampl)-Barnetta(46. Jörgensen)

René Adler has worked in the gym this week but he should be back with the team in the next days.

Extended game summary>>

Jupp Heynckes:
“We created a lot of chances and we should have been more clinical in a few situations. Overall the team was very committed. The condition of the field was not good and it was hard to play on. Especially in the second half, the team has played in that formation before. For that reason I am satisfied with the performance.”

Michael Ballack:
“That was a good start for me. Of course I need a bit more practice after such a long break. But I am happy for now. We have an excellent team and can achieve a lot in the second half of the season.”

Friendly: Fortuna Düsseldorf vs Bayer Leverkusen 2:1

In front of around 1000 spectators Bayer Leverkusen lost 2:1 to Fortuna Düsseldorf.  Helmes scored the only goal for the Werkself after a cross by Sidney Sam.  Simon Rolfes played 90 minutes and declared to that he felt tired after 75 minutes but overall was very happy with his game.  He could therefore make it into the starting line-up against Wolfsburg next week. Both Rolfes and the assistant of the head coach, Peter Herrmann, said that Leverkusen missed a lot of chances today, otherwise the result would have been different.

Bayer 04 friendly against Schalke 04 (updated)

We will have a friendly on Friday, 3rd of September, 14:30 (GMT+2) against Schalke 04 in Wuppertal.  Rolfes is planned to make his comeback in this game and Ballack will also use it to gain more match fitness (02/09: Ballack did not participate in the training session today, due to a stomach bug. Maybe he is not playing the friendly tomorrow).

Adler, Kießling, Barnetta, Derdiyok, Hyypiä, Kadlec, Kaplan and Vida are away with their national teams, and will not be available for this friendly.

The game will most likely not be shown on TV/Internet.
Our next official match is on the 11th of September against Hannover 96 away, I will prepare a preview on the games in August, and keep you updated on the performance of the Bayer 04 players with their national team in the next days.  The transfer windows closes tonight, it looks like the squad will stay as it is.
